This paper stems from our research in information and communication sciences on the challenges posed by the anthropomorphisation of companion robots; This research seeks to identify the hallmarks of a gestural language specific to these digital devices designed to integrate into domestic life—a reified and artificialised gestural language that already establishes artificial interrelationships, whilst producing a mechanised, tool-based language. The reconfigurations of language establish narration/storytelling as the pre-eminent mode of a new ideology: the unfolding of dialogue with the inanimate and, with it, the advent of an intra-facial and subjugated mode of speech. We will show that, through mimetic shaping in representations on the interactive stages of everyday life, companion robots reveal an opportunistic compositional gesture, made up of extrinsic narratives, strongly driven by marketing and corporate strategies that are problematic in their self-referential formulations.
